What Will Your Legacy Be?
Have you ever thought about what you'd like your obituary to say one day? How will you be remembered when your time here is done? I know it may seem a bit morbid to think about, but it’s a question worth asking.
The Power of Perspective: Alfred Nobel's Story
Most of us will recognise the name ‘Alfred Nobel’ because of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. But what many don’t know is that the man behind the prize didn't always have such a noble legacy. Nobel made his fortune by inventing dynamite and other explosives, which were used to develop weapons. The story goes that when his brother Ludvig died, a newspaper mistakenly printed Alfred's obituary instead. The headline was not a flattering one: ‘The Merchant of Death’. It went on to say, "Dr Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster, died yesterday".
This stark assessment of his life shook him to the core. Nobel was horrified to think that this would be his legacy. He didn’t want to be remembered for bringing destruction into the world, so he made a life-altering decision. From that moment on, he resolved to use his wealth to recognise and reward accomplishments that benefit humanity. And that’s how the Nobel Peace Prize was born.
Rewriting Your Story: The Opportunity for Change
Nobel had a rare opportunity: the chance to read his own obituary while still alive, and then the ability to rewrite it. He looked at the legacy he was leaving behind and chose to change it. In a way, we all have that same opportunity. While we may not get to read our obituary before we die, we do get to consider the legacy we’re building right now. Every day we have the chance to edit our story, to ask ourselves:
“What do I want to be remembered for?”
“What kind of impact am I making?”
“Am I living the life God has called me to live?”
The Bible reminds us, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12) and also, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” These verses encourage us to be mindful of our time on earth and use it wisely, shaping our legacy in alignment with God's purpose for us.
Leaving Your Mark: A Legacy of Impact
Our legacy isn't confined to an obituary - it's woven into the fabric of our daily lives. It's about the lives we touch, the values we embody, and the lasting impact we make on the world around us! Challenge yourself today to reflect on your legacy. What changes can you make to ensure your story reflects God's calling for your life? Here are three things you can do prayerfully:
Identify your core values and passions. What truly matters to you? What brings you joy and fulfilment? What has God put within you?
Envision your legacy. What is God’s vision for your life? What kind of impact do you want to leave on the world? What is the gap between where you are now and where you desire to be?
Create a roadmap. What is God asking you to do now? What goals can you set that align with your values and vision? What actions can you take today to move closer to your aspirations?
What will your story be when it's all said and done? Remember, if you’re reading this, it's never too late to edit your story! The pen is in your hand - write a legacy that leaves a lasting mark of love, purpose, and faith!
