Truth in a World of Lies
In today's information-saturated world, misinformation and disinformation have become almost daily companions in our digital and social spaces; alarmingly, this flood of unreliable information has fuelled fear, scepticism, and confusion, eroding both our trust and our grasp on truth. In the midst of such a cacophony of opinions, agendas, and lies, it is more important than ever to hold on to the biblical concept of truth as objective, absolute, and universal.
The Foundation of Objective Truth
This understanding of truth isn't just for theologians—for example, it's foundational for scientists, mathematicians, medics, and law enforcement, to name just a few. It empowers us to challenge falsehoods, pursue genuine understanding, and engage in meaningful, honest dialogue. Without this belief that truth exists independently of our personal opinions, beliefs, and cultural trends, we will get swept away into a sea of relativism, where everyone's "truth" is equally valid, regardless of whether it corresponds with reality.
In matters of faith, I believe this becomes even more critical - for ultimately we are talking about matters of life, death, and eternity! While different religions offer diverse perspectives, basic logic—specifically the law of non-contradiction—dictates that contradictory claims cannot each be equally valid. Concepts like God's existence, the Bible being the Word of God, Jesus' divinity, and the promise of eternal life aren't mere preferences - they either reflect reality or they don't.
It’s vital that we ground our beliefs in objective reality, not just in what feels good or is socially acceptable. Sincerity alone doesn't make a belief true; history offers countless examples of people sincerely believing falsehoods, with devastating consequences. Equally, we can respect diverse beliefs and engage in open dialogue (with love and clarity!) while still upholding the idea that not all claims are equally valid; truth is exclusive by nature and truthfulness should not be conflated with tolerance.
The Freedom Found in Truth
In a world lost in misinformation and disinformation, the biblical concept of truth offers a lifeline. Truth isn't just an abstract concept; it has a profound impact on our lives. When we embrace objective truth - specifically the truths revealed in Scripture and embodied in Jesus - we experience a transformative power that sets us free to live (cf. John 8:32). This freedom includes:
Freedom from deception: in a culture where lies and half-truths abound, truth provides clarity and discernment. We are no longer swayed by the shifting winds of popular opinion or deceived by manipulative narratives. We can see through the fog and make decisions based on what is real and lasting.
Freedom from fear: when our lives are anchored in truth, we find stability and security even in the midst of uncertainty. We know that God's love and faithfulness are unwavering and His promises are sure. This knowledge can free us from the anxieties and fears that all too often grip us.
Freedom to flourish: truth empowers us to live authentically and purposefully. We are not bound by the need to conform to the world's expectations or chase after fleeting pleasures. Instead, we can pursue what is truly good and meaningful, living lives that reflect God's design and purpose for us.
Freedom to love: when we know the truth about God's love for us, we are freed to love others unconditionally. We can extend grace and forgiveness, even to those who have wronged us. We can see the inherent value and dignity in every person, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Championing Truth in an Age of Confusion
Jesus spoke of the narrow way that leads to life, contrasting it with the broad road leading to destruction (cf. Matthew 7:13-14). While the narrow path may seem restrictive, it is grounded in objective reality. True faith, in the biblical sense, means aligning oneself with this truth, even when it is difficult, unpopular, or countercultural. By upholding objective truth, we can live authentic lives and share the transformative message of the gospel with confidence and conviction.
Truth is not just an abstract concept - it is the very foundation of true freedom and lasting fulfilment. And the stakes are high: in a world awash with lies, where many dismiss objective truth yet are still desperately seeking something solid to cling to, we must hold fast to the truth—not just for ourselves, but also for those lost in the confusion.
So Christians, let us champion the biblical understanding of truth - truth that is objective, absolute, universal, and eternally significant. Let us hold to such truth boldly, reflecting God’s love and grace in everything we do. Let us engage the world with gentleness and respect, always pointing others to the source of all truth — Jesus Christ. In Him, we find not only the truth, but the hope and clarity this world so desperately needs.
